Shout-Out to MLK Library Friends
by Monte Monash, Chair, Board of Library Trustees
In celebration of the newly-modernized Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, DC native Alexandra Hutchinson and her ballet partner Derek Brockington, both of the esteemed dance troupe, the Dance Theatre of Harlem, choreographed a story of what a magical place a library can be, especially to a young ballerina. Commissioned by the MLK Library Friends (led by Friends President Robin Diener), Alexandra and Derek perform throughout the District’s central library to the music of composer William Grant Still (1895-1978), the first African American to have a symphony performed by a professional orchestra in the United States. Alexandra grew up in Southwest Washington D.C. and frequented both MLK Library and the Southwest location.
