The first DC Reads book Creatures of Passage (available to read on Libby) by Morowa Yejide lent itself to a wonderful session. Afterwards, Librarian Esti Brennan (who is also Adult Services Manager for MLK) followed up with these helpful annotations for things that came up during the conversation:
- Morowa Yejidé on the LitHub podcast
- A history of The Big Chair
- Overview of the myth of Nephthys, and a more in-depth version of the story
- A timeline of the AIDS epidemic in the US
- Colors in the book:
- L. Hinds noted that blue is often associated with communication, which tracks with the blue smoke that Nephthys and Find Out use to fill their roles in the story
- Natalia provided this note on obsidian, which is referenced several times: “Obsidian is a highly-regarded protective stone, known for its ability to block, absorb, and transform negative energy. Obsidian is believed to be a stone of clarity, with the ability to release emotional, physical, and spiritual blockages, drawing out stress and tension.”
- The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum has great online resources that cover the history of the neighborhood (as well as a broader view of urban communities throughout history). Also well worth an in-person visit if you’ve never been!
- And last but certainly not least, here is DCPL’s Anacostia neighborhood history libguide.
